The Horse Wrangler — Prairie Study

The Horse Wrangler — Prairie Study honors life on the open range of the Texas Territory. The horse wrangler oversaw the remuda — the working horses that powered every cattle drive. Rising before dawn to gather and prepare the mounts, his work was essential to the success of life on the trail. The piece draws on the photography of Erwin E. Smith, who devoted his career to documenting the disappearing world of the American cowboy. Working with large-format glass plate negatives, he created one of the most important visual records of ranch life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
